There is something in the human figure that connects the past with the present. I see my work as a translation of past modes into the present, partly because my greatest inspirations come from Old Master painting, particularly the diverse work of Giotto, Titian, and Moreau. I’m interested in the way these artists painted the human figure, and in connecting my work with theirs through human subjects.
Along with many other artists, I hold the belief that what makes the best art valuable can’t always be adequately expressed within the limits of language. I like to suggest mythological or archetypal themes in my paintings, but mostly I am concerned with re-discovering and conveying the simple wonder of existence. |
