I am interested in objects and spaces that surprise me in my passage through the world. They are often things that appear functionally banal or mundane. The fact that they are there is taken as a given. They seem to take themselves seriously. I find their earnest dignity comical. I am interested in the way drawing can be used to create and convey a dialogue between humour and pathos.

Initially, my subject matter sparks an interest in me because I am interested in form. I am not interested the functional use, but when the objects have been explored through drawing, the function or apparent ambiguity of function adds humour to the image.

I am drawn to objects which are either man made or interfered with by humans to make something that they believe has a practical use. The creators of these curious objects often do not seem to take into consideration the visual concerns of the objects they make. I am fascinated by these curious creations.

The objects in the works I make often seem alien to their surroundings and have feeling of otherworldliness. They have a relationship to this world but seem to be caught in a 'third space'- not quite 'the imaginary' and not quite 'the real'.

Drawing allows me to take ownership of the images, and takes the objects out of their already unfitting surroundings and exaggerates the humour of the context, or takes the objects or spaces into the realm of the imaginary.
